Successfully surfacing new and rehabilitated bridges with hot mix asphalt (HMA) presents challenges for both materials and procedures. At the same time, the severe conditions that bridges experience can amplify any deficiencies in quality control or quality assurance.
To help owners, consultants and contractors maximize the quality and life of HMA pavements on bridges, the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) has launched a new project called “Best Practices for Bridge Deck HMA Paving.” Among other tasks, the project will:
This project was initiated by TAC’s Pavements Committee and Soils & Materials Committee, and will be led by Stantec Consulting with a final report expected in 2022. It was made possible through financial contributions from 10 partner organizations including Alberta Transportation, City of Edmonton, City of Saskatoon, City of Winnipeg, McAsphalt Industries, Ministère des Transports du Québec, Newfoundland and Labrador Transportation and Works, Northwest Territories Department of Infrastructure, Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways, and Yukon Highways and Public Works.
